Our Students

ASA fosters equality and educational opportunity for individuals with non-traditional backgrounds: the culturally different, the socially maladjusted and the economically and educationally disadvantaged. We serve high-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 19. Most of our students come from Chicago’s West Garfield Park community – a west side neighborhood grappling with high crime and unemployment, soaring poverty, low economic vitality, decreased housing and deteriorating family structures.

Our students come to ASA for a host of reasons including low academic performance, chronic truancy, teen pregnancy, gang activity, and negative or disruptive behavior. It is not uncommon for our students to have been incarcerated or have parents that are or have been in jail.

Alumni

No matter a student’s circumstances when they first come to ASA, our goal is to have students graduate with a renewed sense of self and an invigorated hunger for the future. ASA continues to graduate more than 70% of its high school class every year. In the last three years, ASA averaged a 76% high school graduation rate with more than half of its graduates opting to continue their education at 4– and 2–year colleges or universities and the remaining students finding opportunities in the military, vocational school, or public and private sectors.
